To be fair on Kandinsky, he might not have presented his torhey as an absolute either. He used it as a teaching exercise to get his students thinking about shape and colour. It was part of a creative process. I may be wrong about that he did try to set out a series of absolute principles of design. This idea of discovering absolute principles hasn't really stood the test of time which I think is what the book is trying to say as our understanding of the relationship between science and the world has moved on. But in spite what may seem to be a bit of a theoretical blind alley to modern eyes, the work of the Bauhaus artists and designers was mostly highly successful and does stand the test of time. That's interesting.
